Loft Conversion

Plimsoll Road, Islington, London N4

This project is a loft conversion located in a Victorian house. The client’s brief was to create a bright, unique and modern space suitable for an artist’s studio and client entertainment.

The creative approach was to remove the ceiling from the floor below to create a unique double height space. This required structural alterations to include new bespoke structural timber trusses to support the roof. This design approach is rather extravagant as most client’s prefer a loft conversion to provide an extra habitable room as opposed to ‘extending an existing space upwards’. As a result, a unique space has been created.

High level roof windows were fitted that are electronically operated to control natural light and ventilation via a wall mounted keypad or remote control. A south facing roof terrace was created that acts as a continuation of the mezzanine level which is accessed via a bespoke timber cladded steel staircase. Both the existing brickwork and timber floors were restored rather than replaced or hidden in order to maintain the original period character of this loft space which hopefully works well alongside the cutting edge contemporary design.
